McCain: 100 years in Iraq

January 8, 2008 22:58 by matthewcain

Now that McCain has won and Obama barely lost in New Hampshire, let’s go ahead and imagine that Obama will have to face McCain in the 2008 election.  This is obviously hypothetical as the Republican race is still up in the air, but let’s look into the future 4, 8…100 years.

Obama’s plan is to reduce troop levels and withdraw from Iraq ASAP.  As the troop levels decrease, we will also work on increasing our energy independence in the interest of national security.  Global warming has been in our vocabulary for as long as I can remember, yet it hasn’t motivated us to change our behavior.  Alternative energy in the interest of national security, however, will help the environment and reduce our involvement in the Middle East.

McCain, on the other hand, would be happy to keep troops in Iraq for 100 years!  Not that the president would have 100 years of influence, but imagine even 4 more years of our presence aggravating the Iraqi population.  We’ve already displaced millions of Iraqis and been involved in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.  Our military is overextended and we’re losing ground in other places.

Is Obama idealistic?  Maybe, but McCain needs a serious reality check.

New York Times columnist David Brooks compared and contrasted these two in his column today: www.nytimes.com/.../08brooks.html?ref=opinion

While he seems a little more positive on McCain than Obama, he compares and contrasts their leadership style based on their individual values/emphases.

Being in Iraq hasn't helped global warming, stability in the Middle East, the price of oil, the US economy, etc. In fact all of these things have gotten worse under George W. Bush. McCain seems to be like Bush 2.0. As we've learned from Web 2.0 there's a lot of hype in marketing for things that are often just the original Wink

"Is Obama idealistic?"

Yes, and I would have to say to his detriment and will hurt him in the election.

"McCain needs a serious reality check."

A reality of America retaining a presence in countries like South Korea, Japan, and Germany for 45-60 years?
Or a reality check which states "Winning the first Primary election in N.H. [like he has in past] does not mean winning the Republican nomination and final run to the Presidency of the United States of America?
