Now that McCain has
won and Obama barely lost in New Hampshire,
let’s go ahead and imagine that Obama will have to face McCain in the 2008
election. This is obviously hypothetical
as the Republican race is still up in the air, but let’s look into the future
4, 8…100 years.
Obama’s plan is to reduce troop levels and withdraw from
Iraq ASAP. As the troop levels decrease,
we will also work on increasing our energy
independence in the interest of national security. Global warming has been in our vocabulary for
as long as I can remember, yet it hasn’t motivated us to change our
behavior. Alternative energy in the
interest of national security, however, will help the environment and reduce
our involvement in the Middle East.
McCain, on the other hand, would be happy to keep troops in Iraq
for 100 years! Not that the president would have 100 years
of influence, but imagine even 4 more years of our presence aggravating the
Iraqi population. We’ve already
displaced millions of Iraqis and been involved in the deaths of hundreds of
thousands of people. Our military is
overextended and we’re losing ground in other places.
Is Obama idealistic?
Maybe, but McCain needs a serious reality check.
